KB_Bio_101: Progress in Deep Knowledge Representation of a Biology Textbook and Open Challenges

vinay_mini.png Dr. Vinay K. Chaudhri is a program director in the Artificial Intelligence (AI) Center at SRI International. His research focuses on the science and engineering of large knowledge base systems and spans knowledge representation and reasoning, question answering, knowledge acquisition, and innovative applications. His most recent work has been on creating an intelligent textbook in biology that answers a student's questions and leads to significant learning gains. A video on this project won the best video award at AAAI. He has co-edited a volume on the theory and application of conceptual modeling, and two special issues of AI Magazine --- one on Question Answering Systems, and another on application of AI to Contemporary and Emerging Education Challenges.

ABSTRACT Creating a deep knowledge representation from a textbook with the goal of answering questions about it provides a well-scoped and yet a challenging task for conceptual modeling research. Solutions to this problem has wide ranging applications in domains such as education, bio-informatics, e-science, legal knowledge, finance, sports, etc.

In this tutorial, I will describe the progress we made towards this goal as part of Project Halo. I will begin by first introducing the knowledge representation used and then describe the design of the following ontologies:

  • An upper ontology of physical actions and associated relation vocabulary
  • Ontology of structure and function
  • Ontology of process regulation
  • Ontology of energy transfer and change

We will make available a version of KB_Bio_101 in multiple standard formats including OWL, Answer Set Programming and First Order Logic. I will demonstrate these ontological concepts by using a live version of KB_Bio_101.

I will discuss a systematic knowledge engineering process that we used for creating this KB. Towards the end of the tutorial, I will introduce the open ontological modeling problems that are open for research. This KB is a valuable resource for pursuing research in ontology design, ontology management, automated reasoning, natural language generation, and automated knowledge acquisition.

The Industrial Application of Ontology: Driven by a foundational ontology

chris_mini.jpg Chris Partridge holds an MA in Mathematics and Philosophy from Oxford University. He has been a Visiting Research Fellow in the School of Information Systems, Computing and Mathematics at Brunel University since 2003. He has been researching the practical application of Metaphysics to software development since 1987. He is the author of a book and over 20 peer-reviewed research publications on the subject. He is the developer of the BORO Methodology for legacy modernisation that includes processes for mining an ontology from existing data.

ABSTRACT The aim of the tutorial is to provide a practical introduction for researchers and practitioners to potential for the use of foundational ontologies in industrial applications, based upon an actual application. The tutorial will be based upon industrial work currently being done using the BORO foundational methodology; an ontology-based systems (and data) re-engineering and modernisation approach. It will start with an introduction to ontology, particularly foundational ontologies. It will then introduce the BORO ontology.

Using these introductions as a basis, it will illustrate walk through a number of illustrative examples of how the BORO methodology has been used to re-engineer data in an industrial context.


Introdução à Teoria Aristotélica das Categorias

É professor assistente da Faculdade Jesuita de Filosofia e Teologia (FAJE) e faz Doutorado na UFMG, cujo tema é a filosofia aristotélica. Trabalha na área de Filosofia, com ênfase em História da Filosofia.

RESUMO O minicurso visa a introduzir seus participantes na teoria aristotélica das categorias. Através da leitura comentada de passagens relevantes, faremos um breve percurso sobre algumas das questões fulcrais da ontologia de Aristóteles, mas que impactaram igualmente o curso do pensamento ocidental. Leremos com especial atenção trechos do opúsculo intitulado Categorias.
